January 14th: Undercurrents at the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern

Join the Collective beneath Buffalo Bayou Park for a visit to the Cistern, a former drinking water reservoir built in 1926 for the City of Houston. Restored by Buffalo Bayou Partnership and opened to the public in 2016, the 87,500 square foot space and its 221 columns have become one of the city's most striking settings for immersive art.

We will experience Undercurrents, an interactive light and sound installation created for the Cistern by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. The Mexican Canadian artist, based in Montreal, is recognized worldwide for work that transforms architecture into living systems of light, sound, and human presence, creating environments that respond to visitors in real time. In the Cistern, visitors speak into intercoms and their voices travel as pulses of light across a mile of glowing lines, answered by earlier voices and by original poems from five Houston writers: Nick Flynn, Aris Kian, Martha Serpas, Jennifer Teets, and Roberto Tejada. The installation closes January 24, 2027, making this one of the final chances to see it.

Thursday, January 14. Time and details TBD.
