Join us for a private visit to Made in Texas, a sweeping group exhibition curated by Dr. Phillip Townsend at the Art Galleries at Black Studies (AGBS). Presented across the Christian-Green Gallery and the Idea Lab, the show brings together works by Texas-born artists including Deborah Roberts, Ja’Tovia Gary, Robert Hodge, José Villalobos, and Charisse Pearlina Weston.

Spanning painting, works on paper, sculpture, and sound, the exhibition considers how life in Texas—and ultimately one’s identity—is shaped by infrastructure, migration, industry, and memory. Together, these artists explore Texas as a living, contested terrain: a place where rural and urban experiences meet, where tradition and speculative futures collide, and where the intimate and the monumental sit side by side.

Guided through the galleries, we’ll uncover the stories behind the works and consider how contemporary art can hold memory, provoke conversation, and reflect the many worlds that make up this state.
